The CDC this past week reported an increase in doctor’s visits for influenza-like illness to almost double the national baseline. Additionally, the number of pneumonia related deaths surpassed the epidemic threshold. There are natural remedies that can support and strengthen your immune system.
One of the best prescriptions I dispense is called Oxymel. It’s cheap, always available, quick acting and may be administered to adults and children (over one year old). At the onset of flu-like symptoms, make some Oxymel, snuggle on the couch, and sip periodically throughout the day. It is important to stay hydrated with electrolytes, small children become dehydrated quickly. (Do not skip resting; this is an important part of helping your immune system. Additionally, it protects coworkers and schoolmates from catching and passing around your illness.)
1 cup water
1 head of garlic, peeled
1 inch cube of peeled, fresh ginger
1/4-1/2 cup of honey
1/4 cup applecider vinegar
Bring water and garlic to a boil in a pot with a tight fitted lid. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from heat. Once cooled, add vinegar and honey (to taste). Oxymel may be stored in a glass jar in the refrigerator up to one week.
If your symptoms worsen, or do no improve, make an appointment to see your family doctor.
